Sand, Sea & Spirit

A Sacred Dance Retreat on the Big Island of Hawai’i- February 6-11

dance - ritual - renewal

A sacred dance retreat to open the portals of creativity, healing, and renewal. In the depths of winter, we will grow roots and set intentions for the coming year, planting seeds for personal and collective transformation. Through embodied ritual, sacred circle dances, whirling, improvisation, trance, and release practices, we will journey together for five days—remembering and returning to the wisdom of our bodies and hearts.

Nava Movement and Nava Dance, Miriam’s signature formats, will serve as the foundation for the dance sessions. We will journey through form, including traditional Central Asian dances, dances rooted in shamanic healing rituals, and whirling, while also creating space for improvisation and creative flow. Each day will begin with breath meditation and intention-setting, and will close with dancing into the sunset on the beach—connecting with the sand, sea, and spirit of the elements. Nava Movement and Nava Dance are both heart-centered dance modalities that weave movement and intention to dissolve stagnant energy in the heart chakra and open a spacious vessel for love to flow in and out with ease.

Dancing with (and playing) frame drums will be woven throughout the retreat as a way of connecting with cycles of time—the cycles of life, the moon, stars, and cosmos. Miriam will also offer daily drum circles on the beach in the afternoons.

The retreat will take place at Hawaii Island Retreat, a beautiful and remote eco-boutique center located on the northern tip of the Big Island, near the historic town of Hawi. Miriam has been connected to the Big Island since childhood, returning annually. It is a place where she has learned the language of the sea and connected to her soul’s true nature as a mermaid. In this immersion she will share more about this deep connection, and how the sea can become our teacher and guide.

See the link below for photos of the retreat grounds, which include an infinity saltwater swimming pool!

https://hawaiiislandretreat.com/index.php/en-us/

The structure of the retreat is designed to help participants drop deeply into the experience of being in Hawaii. Rather than a rigorous dance training, this will be an integrative journey: daily dancing combined with time to replenish, explore the surrounding beauty, and relax at the beach. Most days will include one long morning dance session and a shorter session later in the day or evening, integrated with nature and frame drum practice. Miriam will offer daily suggestions for beach excursions and hikes, though participants are welcome to spend their free time as they wish. Most outings will be within a 30-minute drive of the retreat center.

Come release, rejuvenate, and restore your vitality in one of the most beautiful and magical places on earth!

Nava Dance Immersion- Movimento del Mare ~Movement of the Sea

June 26 - July 1 2025 | Calabria, Italy

This immersion will dive deep into Miriam’s unique format Nava Dance which is deeply rooted in Central Asian dance aesthetics and is inspired by Sufi mystical themes, devotional whirling and contemporary dance practice. Central to Nava Dance format is the notion of embodied intention and ritual, the ability to transform one’s emotional, mental and spiritual states through movement layered with ritual and meaning. Cathartic release is also an important pillar in the Nava Dance format, and is a movement therapy that helps dancers to both push the boundaries of physical limitation, finding more release in the body as well as a letting go of negative energies and blockages. Ultimately the intention of the practice is a holistic movement journey of personal and collective transformation.

The waters of Calabria are magical, and we will honor the water element each day through movement, exploring the ways water moves us. We will practice the “Art of Mermaidism,” one of Miriam’s most beloved practices.

Each day will include some theory, technique, improvisation and choreography in the Nava style. The level of dance will be geared towards experienced dancers wanting to both explore this unique format as well as push the borders of physicality and creativity through immersive practice. The work will be focused mainly in a beautiful spacious dance shala but will also explore the natural surroundings nearby through site specific dance installation.

This is a great opportunity of students of Nava Dance to experience the work in a deep immersive format. It is also a great immersion for dancers interested in pursuing the Nava Dance teachers training which will should be released 2026.  Students new to Nava Dance are also welcome as long as they have significant training in another form of dance practice.

The setting of the retreat center is beautiful and surrounded by flowers and trees, situated directly on the sea side with sandy beaches and magnificent swimming in calm turquoise waters. There is a beach bar, pool, hot tub, and lovely areas to lounge with friends.

ABOUT
Dances for the Divine Mother dives deep into the soul trait of compassion, connecting to the divine mother, eternal source of compassion. The word for compassion in Arabic and Hebrew also translates as “womb” - Rahma/Rehem. Through our dance, song and chant we will explore how we can embody the divine mother and the soul trait of compassion. We will open our hearts and bodies to deep healing from the movement experiences, ocean currents, sisterhood and songs for the mother. Each day will journey through morning yoga practices, ritual infused dance, vocal and percussive sessions, and guided improvisation. The immersion will culminate in a site-specific prayer-formance of song and dance in the temple of Delphi. It will be a deeply layered ritual that will include all of our collective sacred movement practices, prayers, songs and intentions for calling compassion into our lives and into the world. This year we will be joined by special guest teachers Shirin Ourmutchi - Soul Light Yoga and Marie Trezanini - Vocals. I am so excited to share this new offering with sisters from around the world!
