What to expect

OUR PRACTICE

Each day we will open with a devotional morning practice including water meditations, morning gratitude prayers, dream remembrance, and purification breath practices. Then, after a light breakfast, we will continue into an immersive movement journey weaving dance and somatic practice. Afternoons will be spacious for relaxing, swimming, connecting with fellow mermaid sisters, and nourishing ourselves with an amazing healthy Greek catered lunch. At sunset we will sing and drum as offerings to the sea, improvising with song and dance while connecting with the water and surrounding natural elements. Some sunset dances will explore individual improvisation and site-specific score work. Dance and movement practices will be wide in scope, including elements from Nava Dance, Nava Movement, Sacred Circle dances, whirling, improvisation, and somatic inquiry.

EXCURSIONS

Two of the afternoons will include field trip journeys to nearby beaches, inspiring another dimension of our movement practice. On those nights we will dine in local tavernas, getting a taste of real Greek culture. Some evenings we will sit around the dinner table and connect more deeply through storytelling and wisdom sharing; some nights we will meditate in the sauna; and other evenings we will sing, drum, and offer healing chants from the Moroccan Guedra tradition.

NOURSHMENT

Our chef Vardit will nourish us with incredible gourmet, health-conscious Mediterranean cuisine. She pours love and healing energy into every meal she cooks.

INTENSION

Over the course of the week, we will honor and connect more deeply to the earth and to our own bodies, while also creating space for healing and integration around the various cycles and passages unfolding in our lives. We will be inspired by the gorgeous surrounding nature and seaside, and connect with the natural rhythm of our movement and breath.

“OFF-GRID” EXPERIENCE

After the retreat finishes, there will be an added optional “off-grid” experience, July 26-30th. 4 days of ReWilding the spirit through raw explorations in nature, connecting with the elements, and creating site-specific installations drawing inspiration from some of the most magical beaches/mountains in Crete on the Chania side of the Island. This immersion is only open to a small group of participants, and has a separate fee of $250. for the dance/travel expense and a separate fee for accommodations TBD.

DETAILS

LEVEL: This workshop is open to dancers from any background and will have a mixed level approach that at times will challenge and push our physical ability, and at other times will feel easy, relaxing, playful, and improvisational! There will be a good balance of structure and creative flow.

LOCATION: Our center is directly on the Mediterranean Sea on the South East part of Crete in the village of Ferma, near the city of Ierapetra. The closest airport is Heraklion about 1.5 hours away.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Our center features shared rooms (2 per room), a beautiful dance sanctuary, a private deck leading right into the sea with private access to swimming, a dry sauna, and lovely spaces to recline with friends.

*Please note that accommodation room preferences are given out in order of registration.

*Special top floor suite with queen bed and spectacular views (extra $100.)

*Prices include the dance immersion, shared accommodations for six nights, all meals (with the exception of 1-2 Taverna dinners out)

*Prices do not include transportation. You will need to cover airfare and taxi- to and from airport.

*This immersion has very limited spaces to offer dancers an intimate and meaningful learning experience.

An Immersive Dance Exploration with the Natural World
Distilling down to our most raw elements, returning to our sacred flow. A deep encounter with our most primal bodies connected with the water element. We will become water devotees practicing the art of mermaidism for 6 days as we reside, dwell and dance directly on the seaside.
